Painless Performance FAQ

1. What makes Painless Wiring different from other wiring harness brands?

Painless Performance harnesses are designed as complete systems, not just bundles of wire. Every kit uses color-coded, high-grade TXL, labeled wires printed every 12 inches with the circuit name for easy identification. Most harnesses include pre-terminated factory connectors, modern fuse blocks, and detailed full-color manuals to make installation fast, clean, and reliable — no guessing, no splicing, no frustration.

2. What does “Direct Fit” mean?

“Direct Fit” means the harness is built specifically for your vehicle. These harnesses include factory-style connectors, correct wire lengths, and routing designed to fit the original firewall, dash, and lighting locations. You’ll be able to plug directly into stock switches, lights, and accessories — it’s as close to OEM as you can get while upgrading to modern protection and fuses.

3. What’s the difference between a Direct Fit and a Universal harness?
  • Direct Fit harnesses are designed for specific vehicles (e.g., 1969–70 Mustang, 1966–67 Nova).

  • Universal harnesses fit a wide range of vehicles and are perfect for custom builds or street rods.
If your car is stock or mildly modified, a Direct Fit is usually best. For custom applications or shaved-firewall builds, a Universal harness gives you more flexibility.

4. Are Painless harnesses plug-and-play?

Depends on the harness and your application. Direct Fit harnesses come with many factory connectors already installed. Universal harnesses are generally not plug and play as they are designed to fit lots of different applications.

5. Do Painless harnesses include switches, bulbs, or connectors?

All kits include the fuse block, wiring, a pack of connectors, and a manual. Some Direct Fit harnesses also include dash bulbs, door-jamb switches, and mounting hardware. Check each product description for a full list of included items.

6. Can I use a Painless harness with fuel injection or an LS swap?

Yes! All Painless chassis harnesses are compatible with standalone EFI systems, including LS and LT swaps. The chassis harness handles vehicle power, lighting, and accessories, while a separate Painless EFI harness handles the engine management. Together, they provide a complete, modernized electrical system. You will still use almost all the chassis wires even if you go EFI.

7. Are Painless harnesses compatible with aftermarket gauges and accessories?

Absolutely. Each kit includes circuits for common accessories such as electric fan relay triggers, fuel pumps, and aftermarket gauges. The printed circuit IDs make it easy to integrate non-factory parts without confusion.

8. Can I use LED lights?

Yes – LED lights draw less power than traditional light bulbs. The wiring is meant to handle the bigger loads of a traditional bulbs so they can easily handle less loads that LED bulbs have.

9. What type of fuses do Painless harnesses use?

Painless harnesses use common blade fuses with a MIDI or MAXI fuse main protection for better circuit security and easier sourcing of replacements

10. What tools do I need to install a Painless harness?

At minimum, you’ll need:

  • Wire crimpers and strippers

  • A test light or multimeter

  • Screwdrivers and basic hand tools

  • Electrical tape and zip ties for tidy routing
Optional but recommended: a terminal removal tool set and heat shrink tubing for professional results.

12. What if I need help during installation?

Painless provides free U.S.-based tech support by phone or email. Their technicians are enthusiasts who can walk you through troubleshooting or installation questions step-by-step. You’ll find contact info in every manual and at painlessperformance.com.

13. What gauge wire does Painless use?

Each circuit uses automotive-grade TXL wire with cross-linked polyethylene insulation, rated for higher heat resistance than standard PVC. Wire gauge varies per circuit — typically 12–18 AWG depending on load requirements.

14. What is TXL wire, and how does it compare to GXL or SGX wire?

TXL wire stands for Thin-wall Cross-linked Polyethylene wire — the same high-quality wire used in all Painless Performance harnesses. It’s designed specifically for modern automotive environments where heat, abrasion, and chemical exposure can destroy lower-grade insulation.

TXL features a thinner, tougher outer jacket that’s both lightweight and highly puncture-resistant — perfect for routing through tight spaces and sharp body panels. Despite being thinner, it offers superior protection compared to other automotive wire types.

Here’s how it stacks up:

Wire TypeInsulation ThicknessTemp RatingFlexibilityDurability / Puncture ResistanceNotes
TXLThin-wall125°C (257°F)HighExcellent — tough, puncture-resistant jacketStandard in OEM and Painless harnesses
GXLMedium-wall125°C (257°F)ModerateGood — thicker but softer jacket, easier to punctureUsed in underhood and truck applications
SGXThick-wall125–150°C (302°F)LowFair — thick but soft jacket, prone to cuts if snaggedUsed for industrial or high-amp circuits

While GXL and SGX use thicker insulation, their jackets are softer and easier to puncture or tear compared to TXL’s dense, cross-linked outer layer. TXL’s insulation is stiffer and more abrasion-resistant, giving it a longer service life in automotive and off-road environments.

In short — TXL wire is lighter, tougher, and cleaner to work with, offering OEM-grade reliability and protection that thinner, cheaper PVC or softer GXL/SGX insulation can’t match. That’s why every Painless Performance harness is built using TXL wire throughout.
