1966 Chevy El Camino Contest Essays

A.C. Ward Sr.
My name is A. C. Ward Sr. I am a soldier currently serving with an infantry division based in Fort Hood, Texas. I have just returned from my second tour of duty in Iraq. I am very much into hot rod cars and trucks. I purchased a universal wiring harness kit from your company approximately 4 years ago for a project vehicle I was building for a close friend. It is a 1969 SS Camaro with a 383 stroker motor and a Vortec D-1 blower with intercooler. Needless to say, the car was crazy fast. The detailed instructions and every possible connector were supplied in the kit and wiring was as easy as it gets. I own a 1969 Chevrolet pickup that I am planning to build for a retirement gift to myself, if time and money allow. My wife and I adopted a disabled girl between my rotations to Iraq, and that keeps both of us and our three other children very busy. Money is extremely tight around our house, as we have two boys (twenty one and eighteen) in college and our other daughter is a senior who wishes to attend college this summer when she graduates from high school. My seventy five year young mother and my uncle moved in with us to help out taking care of our adopted daughter and it makes life a little easier now with their help, but that is two more mouths to feed, so the hot rod-infraction of the truck will have to wait even longer I fear. My middle son Aric purchased a 1975 F250 four wheel drive pick up recently and it has a Painless wiring kit number 10117. We are currently in the process of sorting out the other issues with the truck (engine, powertrain, body, etc) but have absolutely no electrical problems. The vehicle that your company is giving away is magnificent. It is absolutely stunning to look at and I am certain that it is even better in person. My father purchased a 1973 El Camino brand new in 1972 and I always dreamed of owning it. My dad gave me the Elco when I graduated from high school in 1982. I only wish that your company was around then, as the truck had electrical problems that even the dealership could not figure out. With reading the manuals from Chevrolet, and other sources, I patched up the wiring and was able to drive it until my family started growing. I sold the Elco in 1985 to make room for my new son, and always wished for another one. I am a huge fan of the television shows Overhaulin', American Chopper, American Hot Rod, and Extreme Make Over Home Edition.  Extreme Make Over, and Overhaulin' are making dreams come true for people and it makes me feel like part of the build team whenever the vehicle or home is returned to the owner. I only wish to be able to do something like that someday. I have served almost nineteen years in the Army and have been to combat three times now. I am so proud of the men and women who serve our nation, and feel humbled by the fact that so many have given their lives for the very freedoms that we enjoy today. I feel blessed that you have allowed me to send in this essay and may God bless you and your fantastic corporation. A.C. Ward Staff Sergeant U S Army

Heelllllooooo Painless! The biggest problem i have always had with any of my cars and trucks has been the problem with the wiring in them. When i recently bought my 68 c-10 pickup i decided that would all change with the help from you guys and the painless wiring kit for my truck. I'm trying to make my truck as comfortable as i can on the inside and not have all the problems that i had with my other vehicles, for the simple fact that this truck isn't just for my enjoyment it is also for my best friend. He's in a wheelchair and i decided to build this truck around him all the way from the truck laying on the ground with an air ride suspension, a lower passenger seat, the passenger door opening to a full 90 degrees, and i am also running a premium sound system and i don't want to deal with hassle of faulty wiring and short circuiting every thing and all the hotrodders i hang out with and that have taught me everything i know to this day has recommended Painless wiring to me numerous times and thats what I'm going to do. Looking forward to wiring the kit up and cruising into the sunset.

Went over to a friends house to help get the wiring right on a 55 Chevy. This thing had been totally screwed up by Tony another friend that was there to help again. Steve (55 owner) had got a Painless wiring kit. In no time we had almost everything working again, including time to rag on Tony and his work. Car is still running great after all these years. And we are all still friends. Thanks to working together with help from good quality parts.

It's funny how things change with passing time. For people, the passing of time brings about new wrinkles, gray hair, forgetfulness, and possibly unfortunate events. For cars, it's a bit different. New dings appear, parts go bad, engines lose their original punch, and unfortunate accidents are possibilities. With enough time, wiring goes bad as well. But unlike with people, there are solutions to aging car problems. There are body shops for dings, mechanics for engines, and PAINLESS products for all auto-wiring needs! With PAINLESS wiring, your old wiring can be completely replaced, new fuse box and all. I know this because I purchased one for my 1967 Mustang. When I bought the car four months ago, I looked at the wiring. It had been chewed through and was an electrical fire waiting to happen. I needed an exact replacement, but one that was modernized. That is why I went with a PAINLESS harness. The harness was labeled, fused, came with all the necessary connections, and had great directions which was good because I had no experience with wiring. But most importantly for me, it was a breeze to install. You see, the passing of time has slowed me down a bit as well. I was involved in an unfortunate event when I broke my neck and was paralyzed in April of 2003. I was 20 years old at the time. Metaphorically speaking, my wiring was damaged by the accident. This was tough for me because all of my joys at the time involved being physically active. My main passion, working on my 5.0 Mustang, went right out the door. I sold it within a year to bring in some money and figured I would never work on cars again. Luckily, I was completely wrong. I went through grueling rehabilitation for years, trying to get my internal wiring to repair itself. Time and therapy was just what I needed. Slowly I learned to walk with a cane and braces on my legs. My arms began working better as well. Now, finally at the age of 24, I can walk anywhere with nothing but an ankle wrap on my right leg. I also have a perfectly normal left arm, with some weakness in my right arm. Most importantly, I can now do things like drive and work on cars again (just not as quickly). I can't tell you that I am good as new or that my "internal wiring" has been completely fixed. Unfortunately for me, there are no PAINLESS products for the human body. If there were, I would be better than new. But, I can do the things I love. I can drive where I want, walk where I want, and work on my car when I want. I think my only real problem is that I have no muscle car to drive. But that will come with work. So for now, as time and money permits, I'll keep working on my car. I'll do it slowly, but I'll do it right. I know this because I am taking my time and using great products like PAINLESS wiring. And I know the importance of flawless wiring- personally!

I purchased a 1955 Chevrolet 1st series pickup that someone had for sale as he did not have the know-how to restore the vehicle. The truck was in fair shape but had very bad 6 volt wiring and nothing electrical worked. The truck came with a Painless wiring kit which I was not familiar with but had a manual and all the parts with the kit. I took out all of the old wiring and started reading the manual. I am not an electrician and know very little about automobile wiring but I went step by step, following the instructions and within several days, I had a running truck with lights, radio and all accessories working like new. The process was easier than I had ever thought and I eventually added power windows, locks and added to the stereo system with ease. I was able to finish the truck and sold it for a very hefty profit and I could never have done it without the Painless kit. I am planning on buying a 65 Mustang and will purchase a Painless wiring kit to restore it as well. You have a great product and I recommend it to all of my friends that fix up cars. I was introduced to my lifelong love of restoring classic cars by my dad when I was 14 years old. Our first project was a 1937 Ford, 3 window coupe. We found this old rusted out car at a junk yard and began the long process of restoring it from ground up. When it came time to get the engine up and running we found Painless parts, namely the wire harness. Painless has now become must have parts on every car I have restored. I wouldn't be able to build a car without them.

All I hear about is how great your company is from my boyfriend; he's been obsessed with your company since he used your wiring harness in his 1968 Camaro. Along with having a boyfriend who can't keep his mind off of cars, I have had a passion for the old muscle cars ever since I can remember. I grew up on a farm in South Georgia, and sitting in my grandfather's barn was a 1970 LS5 Chevelle SS. When I was three, I would sit behind the wheel and make racecar sounds. I would hold the wheel and dream about being on the road behind the wheel of my own muscle car. I could almost feel the seat rumble with all the power of the 454 under the hood. I begged my grandpa to take me for a ride, but the car had a blown head gasket, and had been sitting and rotting for many years. When I was seven years old, my grandpa made me a deal that I have never forgotten. Over our favorite afternoon snack of chocolate pudding, he promised that on my fifteenth birthday, the Chevelle would be mine. As time passed and the paint faded, I got more and more anxious to own my dream car. However, the story wouldn't turn out quite as I planned. My grandmother and grandfather began to fight more and more. I wasn't allowed to go to their house as often, and began spending a lot of time with a babysitter. I was only twelve and very confused. I didn't understand that life isn't always so wonderful. One afternoon when I came home from school, my mom was home. This was odd because she worked long hours to be able to make ends meet. Her eyes were red, and she said that we needed to talk. I sat with her as she tried to explain what was going on. After 39 years of being married, my grandmother and grandfather were getting a divorce. I was too young to fully understand. All I knew was that my grandfather was moving to Tennessee, and I wouldn't be able to see him all the time. I was devastated. Over the course of the next year, I hardly saw my grandparents. The divorce was very nasty and tore most of my family apart as everyone took one side or the other. Somewhere in the shuffle, it was decided that the Chevelle would be sold. I was so angry. Not only was I losing my grandfather, I was losing one of my dreams. I am now twenty years old, and studying Law at the University of Georgia. The studying has me spending many hours in the library, instead of in a shop doing what I love. I have maintained a 3.58 GPA, but would rather be out in the garage working with my boyfriend on his 1968 Camaro. However, I am working hard now in hopes of being able to play later. I one day hope to own and restore a 1970 Chevelle of my own. With the use of your great products I hope to put an LS2 engine into a Chevelle of my own using your Painless Wiring harness to make it an effortless swap. I want to be able to modernize the Chevelle so that I can drive it everyday. I dream of being able to make the drive to my grandfather's cabin without having to worry about being stranded on the side of the road. I want to be able to have a car that I can take my grandfather for the ride that he wasn't able to give me. I want to drive along the curvy mountain roads with him, and for him to be proud of the dream that I have fulfilled for both of us.

I've come along way from my wiring knowledge of my teen years. When some friends and I were going on a weekend trip to the closest area for offroaders, we ran into trailer problems. After the bikes and four wheelers were all loaded up and ready to leave, we noticed that the trailer lights weren't working. we fought and fought but when everything was all said and done, we had Scotchloks and wire nuts mixed with residential wiring to get the lights working. We had fun riding though. Months later, after the trailer was re-wired , I traded my four wheeler and trailer for a 1971 Plymouth Satellite. Little did I know what I was in for. I thought that this car was awesome. I just couldn't wait to get it home and cleaned up for my big date that weekend. Well, once I found out that the brake lights, turn signals, and blower motor didn't work, I knew that I was in trouble. After skipping school on Friday to hit the junkyards and working all night and most of the day Saturday, the melted fuse block was replaced and my date went great. Later, after graduation, when I started working full time at a local Chevrolet dealership, I got a chance to buy a totaled IROC Z28. It was alot of fun and hard work swapping the tuned-port and 700R-4 into my S-10, except for the wiring. I fought for weeks trying to join the truck's interior and lighting harness with the engining and transmission harness from the Camaro, but I did it and the results were great. That was a quick and fun little truck, when I wasn't fixing an electrical gremlin. Now for the good part. At the small-town dealership that I worked at, we serviced the town's police cars ( all two of them ). The lights, radio, and sirens were all installed by the town's marshall. Not to impugn on his work ( he is no longer with us ) but there were numerous wiring issues that had to be fixed over the years of their service. So when the town decided to upgrade to new cars, I told them about a company that I had recently discovered, Painless Performance. After seeing the Painless stand-alone fuse/ relay blocks, he knew that the cars needed them. I even got the job of switching everything over from one of the old cars to the new one. After all the equipment was switched over and wired with the Painless harness, they never had another wiring problem again. Plus I got the job of switching over the other car. Although it took some money away not being able to fix his work, it sure did save me alot of headaches. Since then, I've went to work at a local tuner shop and I've done alot of different wiring projects like adding Painless relay kits for electric water pumps, nitrous, and cooling fans. When a co-worker asked me to wire up his dragster, a Painless harness was first on my parts list, when a friend's dad bought a wrecked 5.0 liter Mustang for the drive train, a Painless harness fired it up in his '46 Ford, and when I get ready to drop my Lingenfelter LS-1 into my son's CJ-5, you know who I'll be calling for a harness, Painless Performance Products.
